Scott Unger - Owner, Vice President & Treasurer

Born and raised on the Big Island, Scott graduated from Hilo High School and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Finance from San Diego State University in 1987. With the goal of returning home to Hawaii to raise his family, Scott embarked on his career in the gas industry when he accepted a position with Air Liquide in Kona in 1998. In 2004, he joined AmeriGas, opening their first office on the Big Island and bringing competition to the island’s commercial propane market for the first time. Over the years, Scott began to see a particular need for a local company to compete with the large public gas companies . In 2011, Scott formed Alii Gas to bring competitive prices and unmatched customer service to the people of the Big Island.

Interests: Apart from his devotion to family & work, Scott is a devout member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church & the Rotary Club of Kona. He has been involved in numerous programs and committees and is currently heading up the lawn maintenance program at St.Michael’s. In June of 2022, Scott became the President of the Rotary Club of Kona. He is especially passionate about working with Project Hawaii, a nonprofit whose mission is to end the cycle of poverty for children in Hawaii. When he is not working or volunteering his time, Scott can be found in the mountains or in the water!

Karen Unger - Owner, President & Secretary

Karen began her career in the airline industry in 1989, eventually joining Aloha Airlines in 1992 as an agent & then a flight attendant. She spent 17 years with Aloha Airlines until their untimely bankruptcy in 2008. After a brief stint in property management, she joined Scott in the office at Alii Gas in 2013. Scott and Karen have three children: Sam, Hannah, and Jake. In April of 2022, they welcomed their first grandchild, a baby girl named Shiloh.

Interests: Karen is also a devout member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church. She serves as a lector, member of the stewardship committee, a board member for Catholic Charities, and as the head of the Anti-Human Trafficking ministry. When she is not working or volunteering with the church, she can be found on the tennis court!

Alika Gomera - Service Manager

Born & raised on the Big Island, Alika graduated from Kealakehe High School in 2008. After high school, he worked for the Sheraton and then for Cars-Metics for five years as an auto body technician. In 2014, he joined Alii Gas as their first full-time employee. The Unger & Gomera families have known each other since the 1990’s; Scott & Karen were beyond pleased to welcome Alika to the Alii Gas family.

Interests: When he is not working, Alika can be found at the beach with his son, Makoa and his fiancee Aria, diving, or barbecuing with friends.

Hannah Unger - East Side Service & Sales

Hannah was born on Oahu and raised on the Big Island where she graduated from Hawaii Preparatory Academy in 2012. She spent a year post-high school in Argentina as a Rotary Youth Exchange student. She went on to major in Spanish and graduated from Boise State University in 2017. In late 2018, she moved back to the Big Island where she joined the family at Alii Gas.

Interests: From 2019-2020, Hannah served as the Coordinator/Director of the Meet N’ Eat program, a nonprofit that provided a weekly hot meal to the underserved population in the Kealakehe area. She was awarded Rotarian of the Year (2020) for her work with the program. She is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Social Work through UH Manoa. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with friends, hiking & camping, reading, and traveling.

Sam Unger - West Side Service & Sales

Sam was raised on the Big Island and graduated from Konawaena High School in 2009. He went on to play football and study hospitality at Northern Arizona University. After graduating from college in 2014, Sam moved back home to Hawaii where he spent time working at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. In 2016, he and his girlfriend moved to Denver where he worked in the service industry & as a first responder. In 2019, Sam married his longtime girlfriend June and they decided to move back home to Hawaii to join the family.

Interests: When Sam is not working he can be found spending time with his wife June, their daughter Shiloh & two dogs, playing music, watching sports, and enjoying the outdoors.

Steve Masini - East Side Service Manager

Steve Masini was born and raised in the Bay Area in California. He began working in the propane industry in 1992 and has over thirty years of experience.  He served as the General Manager for AmeriGas on Maui from 2008-2016, through which he met Scott. After moving back to the mainland in 2016, Steve joined Teeco Products as a manager. In May of 2021, Steve was brought on as the East Side Service Manager for Ali'i Gas. His knowledge is unmatched and he has already proven to be fundamental in growing our Hilo plant. He has two children, Nicole & Anthony, and five grandchildren.

Interests: In his spare time, Steve likes to barbeque, play golf, hunt, and spend time with family.
